How It Works

"We started with online tutoring, and it is working out great. Ms. Rosemarie and my daughter can see what each other is doing just like if she was in front of Ms. Rosemarie."

"Tiffany enjoyed working one-on-one with you and the laptop throught he webcam. Being able to type her responses and write on the screen and interact with you worked great."

"Since you started online tutoring, we have been able to juggle the schedules and dinner a lot easier. The stress of Max being in the car for 30 to 40 minutes each way has eased, and we have a quality of life back."

What is online tutoring?

Online tutoring is just like being in the same room:

  • I share my screen with your child so the child can see and respond to my instructions.
  • I can see and hear your child, and your child can see and hear me.
  • Your child can move letter tiles, draw on the screen, mark with colors, write, and type.
  • Your child can have a strong  multi-sensory experience using the mouse on a computer or a laptop to drag colored tiles and form words  just as if I was right there in the room.  A touch screen works well as well. Your child will also be able to type and mark words on the screen using the whiteboard tool. If you don’t have a computer or a laptop, tablets such as iPad, Kindle Fire, and Surface can do most activities for a successful experience..

What happens in a lesson?

In an online lesson, your child will participate in a variety of activities:

  • I will present new topics and instruction in color using movable letter tiles on the screen
  • At my prompting, your child then applies the rules and uses the tiles to spell certain words (research has shown that this is one of the best ways to learn to read)
  • Your child applies the rules by reading words, phrases, sentences, and stories which I present on the screen
  • I monitor what your child does and provide correction and guidance as your child applies these rules
  • Both your child and I can mark on the screen to highlight areas of difficulty
  • Your child and I interact by voice with each other constantly throughout the lesson, just as if they were sitting by my side; they can also see me on their screen through a webcam
  • Each lesson is reinforced with worksheets that are made interesting by using an electronic whiteboard that allows your child to mark the worksheet in color
  • I also do fluency practice in which words are displayed briefly for a duration that I determine to build your child's accuracy and speed
  • Lessons include phonemic-awareness exercises which help target the root problem
  • Games are also played briefly at times for reinforcement and motivation

Example of online tiles:

Why do students love online tutoring?

Students find online tutoring exciting and motivational.

  • Students are already used to interacting with computers for fun and enjoyment.
  • The constant interaction keeps them engaged and focused.
  • Students find the sessions more enjoyable and fun when using the computer.
  • Online tutoring interrupts their lives less and takes less time out of their busy day because there is no travel.
  • Students can be tutored in their own home where they feel more comfortable and relaxed.

Why do parents love online tutoring?

Parents also love online tutoring:

  • My experience shows that online tutoring is more effective than traditional tutoring.
  • My students are progressing faster with online materials and technology.
  • Students are less tired and irritable because there is no travel.
  • Students are more cooperative because they are not missing so many other activities due to long commutes.
  • Parents do not have to sacrifice such large amounts of time out of their busy day to get their child help.
  • Brothers and sisters do not also have to be inconvenienced by being dragged along for tutoring appointments.
  • Appointments can be easily scheduled because you do not have to include travel time.
  • Students who have switched to online tutoring often do not want their sessions to end because they are enjoying it so much.
  • Parents’ nerves are spared by not having to tend other children while waiting during traditional tutoring sessions.
  • Parents love the savings in gasoline and wear and tear on their car when they don’t have to drive to tutoring.

What do I need to start online tutoring?

Getting set up for online tutoring is quick, easy, and inexpensive; you will need a:

  • Computer with Internet access speed that is better than dial up (such as DSL or cable modem)
  • Webcam (inexpensive and easily purchased almost anywhere
  • Free screen sharing software that you download in less than a couple of minutes
  • Optional: iPad or Android tablet for an even more interactive experience

It’s as easy as that!

Online Tutoring Testimonials

"I just want to thank you for being so creative and taking the chance with technology to advance your tutoring program. We have been driving for 45 minutes each way for the past year and having 3 kids who are all involved in different activities has had its challenges. Since you started the online tutoring, we have been able to juggle the schedules and dinner a lot easier. The stress of Max being in a car for 30 - 40 minutes each way has eased, and we have a quality of life back. We make these sacrifices in the best interest of our children, but now that you have given us the opportunity to still learn via the web, we have gone from what was a 'chore' 2 nights a week to an actual learning experience 4 nights a week. Max's anxiety has eased, and he looks forward to Skype ringing when he knows it is his 'time' to learn"

“Ms. Rosemarie helped my 5th grade daughter who was diagnosed with dyslexia and as little as four months her grades improved as well as her confidence level. My daughter went from not meeting expectations in reading on the statewide test to coming within two points of exceeding expectations. I have such confidence in Ms. Rosemarie, that she will be tutoring my 11th grade daughter with her study skills. Also, we started with online tutoring, and it is working out great. Ms. Rosemarie and my daughter can see what each other is doing just like if she was in front of Ms. Rosemarie.”

                          - Parent of fifth grader

“Jeff and Amy both really enjoy the tutoring online. They actually both had fun. Amy and Jeff always see mom and dad on conference calls and now that they've both had their first "conference call" they can understand why we are always "shhhhhh-ing" them. Good for you for being such a pioneer in tutoring online!!"

                          - Parent of fourth grader and seventh grader

“I am so grateful for your patience and dedication to your students. Tiffany did very well when we saw you for two hours at a time; honestly I was surprised that you could keep her interested for so long. She never complained about going to see you; which made the 1 hour 15 minute drive worthwhile. Then when we began the online tutoring; it saved on the drive time, and it gave her the opportunity to work for one hour sessions. She enjoyed working one-on-one with you on the laptop through the webcam. Being able to type her responses and write on the screen and interact with you worked great. You elevated my daughter’s vocabulary, and she is reading beautifully. As you know my husband has dyslexia, but he never had the opportunity that our daughter has. We are overjoyed to hear her read without struggle at bedtime. She is enjoying reading much more, and we just completed reading a book from Laura Dower; From the Files of Madison Finn "Save the Date". She enjoyed it so much we are going to read the entire series. Thank you for your dedication and commitment to your students. May God Bless you!”
